Corticosteroids may induce the first stage of the birth process if used during the last trimester of pregnancy and may precipitate premature labor, which may be associated with complications. Additionally, corticosteroids administered to dogs, rabbits and rodents during pregnancy have resulted in birth defects in the young. Muscle wasting may occur in association with corticosteroids, so a high dietary protein intake may be required with long term therapy. Metabolic changes may occur with protracted use of corticosteroids &ndash decreased levels of potassium in the blood in particular. Blood clotting problems may also occur &ndash small areas of bleeding may be seen under the skin. Side effects, such as liver enzyme elevations, weight loss, anorexia, excessive drinking, urinating and eating are sometimes seen following the use of synthetic corticosteroids in dogs.
